About JIDPO

Vision

The 21st century is an age of design, an age when the affluent society will be created through the medium of design. The Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO) was founded in 1969 as Japan's only comprehensive organization of its type on the basis of a report submitted by the Design Council of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. Since then, thanks to cooperation from designers and the generous support provided by administrative agencies and the industry itself, JIDPO has been engaged in a variety of promotional activities such as sponsorship of the Good Design Awards ("G-Mark"). Japanese industry and design has grown significantly during these years. We are proud that JIDPO has been able to play such a significant role in this connection.

Rather than being viewed solely from the economic side as an effective means for creating and selling products, high hopes are being held out for design during the 21st century as a means for demonstrating a new vision and as a fundamental methodology for realizing this vision, in other words as a means for propelling forward our society as a whole. This is an era when design is needed not just by industry but by people from all walks of life. Precisely because there are so many topics to be tackled, the 21st century is an age when design is being called upon as a means for solving many of these problems.

To the background of the high expectations being directed toward design, JIDPO is creating an environment in which, on the basis of close ties with designers themselves, companies and individuals with differing standpoints are able to make appropriate use of the highly attractive concepts and methodology represented by design.
