History

1957: Start of the Good Design Production Selection System (generally known as "G-Mark").
1958: Establishment of the Design Department of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (currently known as the Design Policy Office).
1960: Establishment by JETRO of the "Japan Design House."
1961: Proposal for establishment of a design promotion organization by the Design Promotion Council of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
1969: Establishment of the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO).
1971: JIDPO joins the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID). Takes over the design promotion activities formerly implemented by JETRO.
1973: "1973 Design Year."
1974: Commissioned by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry to implement the "Good Design Product Selection System."
1975: Launching of the system of regional design development promotion projects.
1981: Establishment of the International Design Exchange Association.
1988: Release of the Design Promotion Council's document "Design Policy for the 1990s" and of proposals for a "Design Year."
1989: "1989 Design Year" campaign implemented throughout Japan
1990: Establishment of "Design Day" by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
1993: Publication of the report "New Design Policy in Response to Changes in the Times" by the Design Promotion Council. Establishment of the Design Staff Development Center.
1998: Takes over organization of the "Good Design Awards" accompanying privatization of the G-Mark system.
